Safari from Mara Hilltop
We sit a five-minute drive from the main Sekenani Gate of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Most guests do at least one game drive per day from camp.
### Game drives
Morning drives leave at 06:00 to catch the predators. Afternoon drives leave at 16:00 and run through golden hour. Full-day drives include a packed lunch and cover more of the reserve, including the Mara River during migration season.
### Hot-air balloon
A dawn balloon flight over the plains, ending with a champagne bush breakfast. Pre-bookable; runs subject to weather.
### Walking safari
On-foot exploration with an armed Maasai guide outside the reserve boundary. Focused on tracks, birds, and the smaller story you miss from a vehicle.

### When to come
Year-round wildlife. The Great Migration peaks in the Mara from August to October. Calving in the Mara ecosystem runs January to February. Green-season rates April to June.
### What you'll see
Named for the entities that matter: lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest (especially July–October during the migration), hippo, crocodile in the Mara River, hyena, jackal, bat-eared fox, eland, topi, Thomson's and Grant's gazelles. The Big Five are all resident inside the reserve.
### Game-drive logistics
Morning drives leave at sunrise (5:30–6:00 AM, returning around 10 AM for breakfast). Afternoon drives leave around 3:30 PM, returning by 7 PM. Full-day drives carry a packed lunch and cover more of the reserve, including the Mara River. Drives are in our own 4×4 Land Cruisers; typical ratio is four guests per vehicle, six maximum. Guides are local Maasai born on this land. Game-drive prices are per-vehicle, so groups get a better rate.
### Balloon safari — the practical bit
Sunrise lift-off from a partner operator about a 30-minute drive from the lodge, one-hour flight over the plains, then a champagne breakfast in the bush. Pre-booking is essential — especially July–October during the migration. Budget around USD 450–500 per person depending on operator and season; we'll quote the current rate at the time of your booking.
### Migration timing
July through October are the peak migration months as the wildebeest cross the Mara River from the Serengeti. Book four to six months ahead for these months. November to June is quieter, greener, cheaper, and still has all the resident wildlife — the big cats don't migrate.
### Loita Hills overnight
Multi-day add-on for travellers who want to leave the reserve circuit. Ride or drive into the Loita forest, sleep in a Maasai homestead, walk with elders, and come back changed. Two to four nights depending on the route you want and the weather window. By request — we coordinate the route, the guides, the homestead host, and the return-to-camp window so you're not improvising at altitude.

Eleven guided experiences beyond the game drive, bookable at the lodge or over WhatsApp. Prices are all-inclusive and per person unless marked; they can change with the seasons — the team confirms the exact price at booking.
### Maasai Village Visit — $25 pp
Spend a morning or afternoon in a nearby Maasai village — traditional dances, stories of daily life, and handmade crafts bought straight from the families who make them. The easiest way to meet the culture that surrounds the lodge. Pairs well with the boma experience and the beads museum further down this page.
### Hillside Viewpoint Hike — $75 pp
A guided hike to a hilltop viewpoint with the whole Mara spread out below — about 3 to 4 hours round trip over 8 km, with snacks waiting at the top. No park fees needed: a special arrangement for Mara Hilltop guests.
### Nature Walk + Warrior Skills — $25 pp
An easy 1.5-hour walk through a Mara conservancy right by the lodge — walking among zebras, giraffes and impalas when luck cooperates, with big views the whole way. Then your Maasai guides hand you a bow and a spear: archery, spear throwing, and nature lessons, warrior style.
### Motorcycle Adventure — Full Day — $150 pp
Experience the Mara from the back of a motorcycle, seated behind an experienced Maasai rider — no riding skills needed, just hold on. Ride through the Mara conservancy getting close to wildlife in a way no vehicle can match, pass through local villages and open landscapes, and roll back to the lodge by evening.
### Motorcycle Adventure to Loita — $220 pp · solo $250
A two-day epic: through the Mara and into the remote Loita hills behind your Maasai rider, cutting through rivers and beautiful valleys. All meals, a night in a local homestay, and a forest hike are included. We can extend it into a 3- or 4-day forest camping adventure — just ask.
### Sundowner Experience — ~$90 pp
We take you to a beautiful spot in nature near the lodge with a stunning view of the Mara sunset, and set a table with unlimited wine and beer, good snacks, a bonfire and Maasai dance. It starts with a 30–45-minute guided nature walk — learning the local flora and fauna and seeing wildlife on foot. A really magical evening is what we try to create. About $90 per person, depending on group size.
### Night Safari — From $260
After dark, the Mara changes shifts. This drive runs in a neighbouring conservancy — night drives aren't allowed in the main reserve — from 7 pm to around 10:30 pm. Spot nocturnal species you'll rarely see by day, like the white-tailed mongoose, and catch predators at their most active. The private Land Cruiser, guide and flashlights come to $180 per vehicle, plus $80 per person conservancy entry:

Lift off at sunrise and drift silently over the plains as the Mara wakes up below you — then land to a champagne breakfast in the bush.
### Authentic Maasai Boma Experience — $25 pp
Visit a real neighbouring Maasai homestead — less touristy, more genuine. Try traditional cow milking, tour the manyatta with the family, and drink tea made the traditional way inside their huts.
### Beads Museum Tour — $25 pp · $50 with workshop
A guided tour of a fascinating small museum run by Maasai women — a not-for-profit women-empowerment program — walking you through the history and traditions of the Maasai across Kenya and Africa. Add a hands-on bead-making workshop with the local ladies and take home an ornament you made yourself. About 2 hours, and it pairs beautifully with the village visit.
### Maasai Market Day — $50–60 pp
Twice a week, villages from across the region bring hundreds of cows, goats and sheep to a great open-air auction, while Maasai women run their own market of produce, herbs, beadwork and everyday goods. Zero tourist staging — this is the Mara's real economy in full voice, and you wander through it with our guide. Transport there and back is included; plan around 3 hours.
Thursdays: The big market, in a village about 30 minutes from the lodge. $50 pp · solo $80.
Tuesdays: Another part of the Mara, about an hour's drive — with a good chance of spotting animals on the way. $60 pp · solo $100.

## Getting here (/getting-here)
How to get to Mara Hilltop
Two routes from Nairobi. Both end at the main Sekenani Gate of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, five minutes from camp.
### By road from Nairobi
Five to six hours via Narok and Sekenani. Sealed tarmac most of the way; the last stretch is well-graded murram. Private vehicle or shared safari van; both arranged through camp.
### By air to Keekorok or Ol Kiombo
Daily scheduled flights from Wilson Airport (Nairobi). 45 minutes in the air. We pick up at the airstrip and the camp drive is 15 to 30 minutes depending on the strip.
### Transfers
Airstrip pickups, road transfers from Nairobi, and inter-camp moves are all arranged with the booking. Tell us your incoming flight or pickup point.
### By air from Wilson — operators and schedule
The named operators on the Wilson-to-Mara route are SafariLink, Air Kenya, and Mombasa Air. They land at Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Mara North, or Musiara airstrips, typically with two morning slots around 09:30 and 10:30. From Keekorok we collect you in 30–45 minutes; from Ol Kiombo, around 60. Flight plus transfer combined runs roughly USD 200–300 per person one-way depending on operator and season.
### From JKIA (Nairobi international)
International arrivals at Jomo Kenyatta International should plan a transfer to Wilson Airport for the onward flight (40 minutes by road, longer in traffic), or overnight in Nairobi and fly the next morning. We've seen too many guests miss the same-day flight by an hour to recommend cutting it fine.
### Cross-border from the Serengeti
For travellers combining Tanzania and Kenya, the crossing via Sand River Gate is typically possible with a registered tour operator. Allow a full day and arrange permits and the vehicle change in advance. Confirm current rules with a Kenyan tour operator before booking — border procedures change. We're happy to refer.
### Visas and entry (typical at time of writing)
Most travellers need a Kenya eTA before arrival; the official source is etakenya.go.ke. A yellow-fever certificate may be required if arriving from or transiting a country with risk of yellow-fever transmission — confirm with the WHO list and your departure airline. Reconfirm requirements close to your travel date; we don't want you turned around at the gate.

### What you'll eat
A rotating menu that leans on Kenyan produce: roasted vegetables, fresh salads, slow-cooked stews, grilled meats, daily soups, fresh fruit, and proper coffee. Bread is baked at camp. Dinner is plated; lunch is buffet on game-drive days.

We regularly cook for vegetarian, vegan, Jain, halal, and Indian guests. Allergies (nut, gluten, dairy) are handled if flagged at booking. Children's portions on request.

### What's included in stay rates
Three meals daily on most rates: breakfast (continental plus cooked, with eggs to order and Kenyan-grown coffee), lunch (buffet-style with vegetarian and meat options and a daily soup), and a three-course dinner. Tea, coffee, and juices are included throughout the day. The bar is open and drinks are billed separately on the room folio. Dietary needs flagged at booking are catered without surcharge — Jain, vegan, halal, gluten-free, dairy-free, kids' menus all on rotation.

Breakfast and lunch in the main dining room with views across the valley. Sundowners and a lighter dinner on the rooftop terrace when the weather is kind. Bush dinners on request for couples or special occasions — we'll set the table away from camp, with lanterns and the sound of the Mara at night, and walk you back when you're ready.
### The bar
Full bar with Kenyan craft beer, local gin distilled in Nairobi, South African and Italian wines, and the standard sundowner cocktails. Open from late afternoon through to late night. Drinks are added to the room folio and settled at check-out — no need to carry cash. The barman is happy to mix you something off-menu if you ask nicely.
### Sundowners and stargazing
Our signature evening: drinks on the rooftop or on a quiet ridge in the buffer zone outside the reserve, watching the sun drop over the Mara. After dark, no light pollution — the Milky Way is visible straight overhead on a clear night and we can point out the Southern Cross. Best photo angles are off the south-facing edge of the rooftop, an hour after sunset.

On a hilltop overlooking the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The main Sekenani Gate is a five-minute drive from camp — many travel guides incorrectly say thirty-five minutes; they are out of date. The drive from Nairobi is five to six hours by road or 45 minutes by air to Keekorok or Ol Kiombo.
### Three tiers, one camp
Most camps on the edge of the Mara pick a price point and stick to it. We run three tiers on one site: luxury tents, standard tents, and a hostel. Same kitchen, same staff, same access to game drives. Different beds and different price.
### Why we built it this way
Because the people who come to the Mara are not all the same. Honeymooners and backpackers and Indian families and solo women travellers all want the same access to the wildlife and the same kindness from the staff. The bed is the thing that differs.
### Who runs Mara Hilltop
A single-family operation. NJ leads strategy, marketing, and tech. His brother Nikhil runs day-to-day on-site management. Anupam handles operations. Their father is an advisor and spends stretches at the lodge. Operated under Kumsai LTD, a Kenyan-registered company. Direct contact with the owners during your stay is the norm, not the exception.

Two more luxury tents are scheduled to open July 2026 — tents 9 and 10 — bringing the luxury count to ten. The neighbouring Semadep property is under renovation and opens late 2026 with additional family-tent capacity. The goal is more capacity for the migration season without changing the feel of the place: same kitchen, same staff, same shared infinity pool, same view.

A: Best of both worlds. We sit just outside the reserve, five minutes from the main Sekenani Gate, on a 22-acre hilltop with the best vantage-point views over the Mara. Because we're part of the wider Mara ecosystem, wildlife passes through the property regularly — zebras grazing around your tent in the morning, giraffes and elephants on the plains below. You get the feel of being inside the reserve without paying Park fees on the property, full freedom to come and go, and lower nightly rates than in-reserve lodges.
Q: Is the Wi-Fi actually good enough to work remotely?
